WSIB is Mandatory

Ontario is the only province where WSIB coverage is mandatory for construction sole proprietors. Since January 1, 2013, independent operators in construction must register and pay premiums. Failing to register can result in penalties.

Enforced One-Call Legislation

Ontario has dedicated One-Call legislation (OUINSA 2012) with fines up to $10,000 for digging without locates. 5-day turnaround is the longest in Canada — plan jobs accordingly.

WSIB Requirements

WSIB coverage is compulsory for independent operators, sole proprietors, and executive officers in the construction industry — with or without employees. This is unique among all provinces.

Max Assessable Earnings:

$121,700 (2026)

Exception: Operators working exclusively on home renovation hired directly by a homeowner/occupant may qualify for an exemption.

Starting Your Ontario Business

1. Register Your Business Name

Register via Ontario Business Registry (ontario.ca). Cost: $60. Renewal every 5 years ($60).

2. Register for HST

Single CRA registration covers both federal and provincial portions. Required if revenue exceeds $30K/year.

3. Register for WSIB (Mandatory)

Register at wsib.ca. Required for all construction sole proprietors since 2013.

4. Get Insurance

$2M CGL recommended (~$550+/year in Ontario). $200K minimum TPL for commercial auto ($1M recommended).
